Library: Book No.1

Your Private Sky
The Art of Design Science
R. Buckminster Fuller
2017

Bucky is one of our personal heroes here at Potato Head.

In light of the reawakening interest in R. Buckminster Fuller’s works and thoughts, and of their growing importance for our technological world, it is time for a reedition of this comprehensive and legendary publication from 1999. The visual reader Your Private Sky examines and documents Fuller’s theories, ideas and projects, and critically deals with his ideology of “rescue through technology.” This book provides a highly multifaceted insight into Fuller’s world, also showing many of its less known sides.

Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983) was one of the most revolutionary technological visionaries of the 20th century. He established new standards that can be seen as decisive for future-capable design. “How to make the world work” – to this task he dedicated his unflagging attention. Convinced that specialists usually create more problems than they solve, he developed his concept for a vision of the whole.

As an architect, engineer, entrepreneur and poet, he was a quintessentially American self-made man. But he was also an outsider: a technologist with a poet’s imagination who already developed theories of environmental control in the thirties and who anticipated the globalization of our planet. Catchphrases of our time, like “Spaceship Earth”, “synergetic”, or “think global, act local” – can directly or indirectly be traced back to Bucky.

70s Surf Photographs
Jeff Divine
2006

Surf culture & living alongside the elements are part of daily life here in Bali and woven into the fabric of Potato Head’s own unique way of life.

Jeff Divine's ‘70s Surf Photographs is a colorful, insider portrait of ’70s surf culture, with a foreword by Pulitzer Prize–winning author William Finnegan. If you were there, even just for some of it—Hawaii, California, surfing, the ’70s—the memories and stories will flow freely from these photographs.

Jeff Divine was there for all of it, and these images have been culled from an enormous personal archive. Divine was shooting for Surfer, the monthly magazine that was the bible of the scene. His photos from this archive show the pre-commercialized era in surfing when the hippie influence still held sway. Surfers had their own slang-infused language and were deep into a world of Mother Ocean, wilderness and a culture that mainstream society spurned. Surfboards were handmade in family garages, often made for a specific kind of wave or speed, for paddling, ease of turning, and featured all kinds of psychedelic designs.

The color and black-and-white photographs collected here, taken throughout California on the coastlines at Baja, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, La Jolla, Malibu, San Clemente and Oahu, give a vivid image of this close-knit culture and the incredible athletic feats of its heroes and heroines.

Radical Matter
Rethinking material for a sustainable future
Caroline Till & Kate Franklin
2019

Potato Head’s commitment to a sustainable future is realised throughout the entire Desa in the form of zero waste restaurants, no single use plastic, re-cycled in-room furnishings and our own research & design workshop Sustainism Lab which combines both ancient craftmanship and modern design techniques to transform re-cycled waste into beautiful everyday objects.

Rejecting old assumptions and revitalizing the principles of sustainable production, Radical Matter reimagines material and process to provide the manifesto for a revolution in material innovation.

Guaranteed to inform and inspire in equal measure, this book celebrates the designer and maker as an agent for radical change, disrupting the way we design, make and consume through material innovation. Framed by eight ‘Big Ideas’, with over sixty fully illustrated case studies featuring testimonies from global industry experts, this is an essential introduction to the cutting edge of design for a sustainable future.

Fit for designers at any level, this is nose-to-tail eating for the design world – a vital resource for those looking to understand how to connect materials wih manufacturing and the means of distribution and consumption.

Library: Book No.4

Hi-Fi
The history of high-end audio design
Gideon Schwartz
2019

The high end audio equipment we install for your listening pleasure here at Potato Head is as important to us as the daily soundtrack our resident DJs select.

A beyond-cool look at the world of high-end audio design for passionate collectors, obsessive audiophiles, and design fans. At a time when sales of vinyl records have hit a 25-year high, and analog technologies are providing the kind of extraordinary audio experiences that our increasingly digital world has started to remove, Hi-Fi is essential reading.

This unique book explores just how, when, and why the world fell in love with the look, feel, and sound of top-of-the-line audio equipment. Hi-Fi traces this fascinating evolution from the 1950s to today (and tomorrow), taking readers right up to the current renaissance of all things analog and the emergence of cutting-edge designs for die-hard audiophiles.

Library: Book No.5

Hippie Modernism
The Struggle for Utopia
Greg Castillo
2015

Our world here at Potato Head is informed as much by our contemporary global family as the past pioneers who laid the foundation for us to build upon.

Hippie Modernism examines the art, architecture and design of the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s. The catalog surveys the radical experiments that challenged societal norms while proposing new kinds of technological, ecological and political utopia. It includes the counter-design proposals of Victor Papanek and the anti-design polemics of Global Tools; the radical architectural visions of Archigram, Superstudio, Haus-Rucker-Co and ONYX; the installations of Ken Isaacs, Joan Hills, Mark Boyle, Hélio Oiticica and Neville D'Almeida; the experimental films of Jordan Belson, Bruce Conner and John Whitney; posters and prints by Emory Douglas, Corita Kent and Victor Moscoso; documentation of performances by the Diggers and the Cockettes; publications such as Oz and The Whole Earth Catalog; books by Marshall McLuhan and Buckminster Fuller; and much more.

While the turbulent social history of the 1960s is well known, its cultural production remains comparatively under-examined. In this substantial volume, scholars explore a range of practices such as radical architectural and anti-design movements emerging in Europe and North America; the print revolution in the graphic design of books, posters and magazines; and new forms of cultural practice that merged street theater and radical politics.

Library: Book No.6

Bauhaus
Magdalna Droste
1990

Potato Head’s creative village looks to re-imagine the world of hospitality through the lens of music, art, design, food and wellness. A multi-disciplinary approach that is as much informed & inspired by our contemporary world as past modernist pioneers like the Bauhaus.

Founded by the architect Walter Gropius in 1919, the Bauhaus school set out a craft-based curriculum unifying the practices of architecture, art and design with the aim of reimagining the material world to reflect the unity of all the arts. A radical approach to education that was taught by an incredible community of teachers including Joseph Albers, Marcel Breuer, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Mies van der Rohe among others. This comprehensive volume draws together material from the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin, displaying over 250 new photographs, writings, studies, sketches, plans and models offering an in-depth review of the school's influential work.

Liina Klauss, Desa Potato Head

Sandals salvaged from the beaches of Bali with a powerful message: “Everything we throw away comes back to us—via the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil we grow.”

In its ongoing mission to "provide good times and do good" Potato Head collaborated with award-winning German art activist Liina Klauss to demonstrate the reality of marine pollution. The artist created a large-scale installation at Desa Potato Head constructed from over 5,000 plastic flip-flops, all picked up in just six visits to beaches along Bali’s west coast.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv_wywvqQR8

"Everything we throw away comes back to us, via the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil we grow crops and raise animals on. Flip-flops are just one example; there is potential within all these materials we waste and consider worthless," said artist Liina Klauss."

Traditional flavours. Powered by plants.

Our authentic Indonesian roots have been super-charged at Tanaman, a new plant-based culinary concept at Desa Potato Head. The menu draws on the nostalgic flavours of the archipelago’s classic recipes, using organic produce to create traditional Indonesian dishes.

From mushroom sate to jackfruit rendang, and from botanical cocktails to house-made kombucha, Tanaman expresses the future of food in which traditional flavours are met by a healthier planet.

Merchandise

Signature Shirts
All Potato Head signature shirts are made from Tencel™ fabric, use coconut-shell buttons and are responsibly produced in Indonesia.

Tencel™
Tencel™ is a natural material made from the pulp of fast-growing Eucalyptus trees. The fibre is fully biodegradable and anti-bacterial, uses 80% less water than cotton and is harvested without the use of pesticides or insecticides. All pieces are designed to minimise their impact on the planet and feature prints inspired by Desa Potato Head’s island home, Bali.

T-Shirts
All Potato Head T-shirts are made from organic cotton and produced in Indonesia.

Food and Drink

Conscious Cocktails
Our Conscious Cocktails bar programme is concerned with where we fall in the supply chain of the ingredients we use and how we dispose of them. Fruit is sourced seasonally and we use culinary techniques like curing and natural fermentation to maximise parts of the ingredient that would otherwise go unused. We use locally produced, untreated coconut sugar and raw Balinese honey in our drinks to achieve the balance of flavour. Traditional citrus acids are eschewed for alternative brewed acids, like locally produced raw cider vinegars and plant acids like rosella, and use the husks and leftover pulp from juicing to make in-house liqueurs and syrups.

Cooking Oil
We work with Yayasan Lengis Hijau to process our used cooking oil and biofuel is purchased back in the form of candles or donated to Green School’s Bio Bus Programme, which uses the fossil-fuel alternative to transport children to and from school.

Ijen
A leading example of our ongoing commitment to protect the planet while proving environmentalism and modern design do not need to be mutually exclusive. Produce is from Bali Fresh Farm Cooperative with line-caught fish from Bali Sustainable Seafood and rice from the UNESCO-protected Jatiluwih terraces. Food scraps are meticulously separated into organic and inorganic waste that go into five different bins; what can be fed to pigs is sent to local farms, shellfish shucks are used as a design material at Sustainism Lab or powdered and used in animal feed or fertilizer, and all dry goods are entirely recycled by the island’s responsible waste management service, ecoBali.

Ingredients
We act as a platform for our suppliers to grow their businesses. Working with responsible farmers, artisan producers and other sustainable companies, we invite them to be part of our family and create a value chain relationship.

Water
We partner with BioSystems to retrieve water from the ocean instead of the island’s natural reserve. Through the process of reverse osmosis, salt water is made safe to drink and used across the entire Desa.

Education

We support Green School’s Changemaker program which sponsors young Balinese students to attend the Green School for the entire period of their primary and secondary education. We committed in 2018 and currently sponsor four scholars in grades 2, 3, 8 and 9.

Accolades and Certifications

Most Sustainable Bar
Potato Head Beach Club was awarded the Most Sustainable Bar award by Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2018.

United Nations Climate Neutral Now
Katamama and the Beach Club are certified as climate neutral, as declared by the United Nations’ Climate Neutral Now initiative. This means Potato Head has measured, reduced, and compensated for any greenhouse gas emissions while establishing industry benchmarks for eliminating waste and promoting recycling in Indonesia.

Art Installations

‘5,000 Lost Soles’ (2018) by German art activist Liina Klauss demonstrates the reality of marine pollution through an installation of flip-flops collected along the shores of Bali. The 5,000 sandals were collected by Klauss and her small team in just six beach clean-ups.

The max size of any bus entering our Desa is a 35-seater, which can drop off guests but must park at Petitenget Temple (down the street from us in Seminyak).

Do you host cooking classes?

At the moment we don't offer this, but watch this space! It's in our plans for late 2020.

What kinds of F&B activities do you offer?

We offer master classes in cocktail mixology or how to make djamu, Bali's ancient health tonic.

How many rooms do I need to book to receive a special group rate?

Is there a curfew for outdoor events?

All outdoor events must conclude by 10pm.

Can we put up our own signage during an event?

Banners and other marketing displays are fine in the private event area. Anything visible to Potato Head guests needs to be approved by our team.

Is it okay to put your logo on our event marketing?

The Potato Head logo can be used across communication with your event attendees. In all other cases, Potato Head requires approval before publishing.

What is the initial deposit required to lock in our group?

We require 50% of the total estimated expenses to secure your event booking.

I've heard such good things about Potato Head's music. Can one of your DJs soundtrack our event?

Depending on their availability, our resident DJs are always up for soundtracking your event. Drop us an email to get a quote, including the DJ, equipment and sound system.

We're planning our company conference. Can we buy out the hotel?

Yep! The Creative Centre has 168 rooms and Katamama 57, just let us know what you have in mind and we can work with you to reserve a block of rooms (or all of them!) for a special rate.

What's included in a meeting package?

Standard equipment (one LCD projector and screen, whiteboard, sound system, two microphones) and free-flow coffee, tea and snacks (during the break), free-flow filtered water and mints, plus writing pads and pencils.

A functional bamboo sculpture, "The Womb" greets you with the sound of gongs and a Balinese water blessing. It's here you'll meet our guides to map out your stay.

“Future Design Week…delved into sustainable design, locally sourcing materials and tackling climate change through better design. Among the installations was ‘The Womb’, a tunnel-like passageway made entirely from natural bamboo, woven together without any adhering materials.”

Explore the eco-forward bamboo houses of Green Village.

Set along the banks of Ubud’s sacred Ayung River, Green Village is made up of 13 bamboo residences, each individually designed by Indonesian architecture firm IBUKU. The tour shines a spotlight on homes that exemplify architectural innovation, craftsmanship and conservation

The Experience

First, you’ll stop by IBUKU’s workshop to find out why bamboo is such a strong and versatile building material. See firsthand how the team treats, cuts and crafts the fast-growing grass into furniture, floors and roofs.

After a five-minute drive, you’ll arrive at Green Village for a guided walking tour where you’ll see homes* inspired entirely by nature—like the softly-curved Leaf House. Other designs draw on Indonesia’s indigenous architecture, such as Villa Kelapa, sheltered by two horn-shaped roofs, a distinctive feature of Sumatran Minangkabau buildings.

The entire eco-conscious “desa” (Indonesian for “village”) has been thoughtfully constructed to showcase the surrounding jungle environment and maximise natural light. Open-air lounges, a salt water swimming pool and elevated terraces with volcano views are just a few of the standout features in a concept that champions a sustainable yet modern lifestyle.

"Designed and built by Ibuku, the same team of architects and craftsmen as the school, the Green Village is a master planned community set along the rural landscape of Bali Ayung’s river. The same principles of design and sustainability utilized at the Green School are put to work in this new community making use of bamboo for practically everything in sight. "

Since the first trickle of foreign surfers arrived in Bali in the late ‘60s, the island’s surf culture has transformed, building up a devoted local surf community and an international reputation for its warm waters and year-round swell.

From the dozens of south-coast surf spots, our Canggu-based guide Dani knows where to find the best breaks any time of year. Take advantage of his local know-how and take in Bali’s world-renowned surf scene on a customised surf day. Just ask in advance if you’d like to explore outside Canggu, from more secluded surf sites like Kedungu in Tabanan (Dani’s favourite), to cliff-lined coves in Uluwatu.

The Experience

If you’re a beginner, you’ll start on the sand with demonstrations of body positioning on the board, paddling, and taking off on a wave (jumping up). Next, you’ll head into the water where the guys will guide you into position and help you ride the first wave of the day. Between breakers, Dani will feed you with tips, including how to balance, where to look, leg positioning and how to fall off safely.

Whether in Canggu or further afield in more challenging waters, a day with Dani is a great way to experience the surf lifestyle here, and you’re free to surf and take in the scenery as long as you like.

Sharpen your self defence skills with Balinese traditional wrestling.

Mepantigan, which means “to throw,” is a form of Balinese wrestling that combines self-defence techniques, traditional dancing and fun in the mud. The act is soundtracked by gamelan (a Balinese percussion ensemble) while participants grapple in knee-deep mud with the aim to tripping or throwing their opponent down into the rice field.

Founded by Putu Witsen Widjaya, a martial arts champion, Yayasan Mepantigan hosts hands-on courses in the basics of the practice as a novel stress reliever and fitness builder. Visitor donations from each half-day session help to fund the education of young students from the surrounding area of Batubulan which serve as the the foundation’s instructors.

The Experience

Step over a bamboo bridge into Yayasan Mepantigan’s open-air training grounds, encircled by palm forests. You’ll be greeted with a homemade lemongrass-and-pandan-leaf soda and a deafening kelaras welcome dance, performed by a troupe of masked men.
Your hosts—Komang, Uci and other young people involved in Mepantigan’s programme—will help you into a saput poleng (traditional sarong) in readiness for training.

Shadowing Komang, you’ll pick up sparring techniques, practice Balinese dance gestures, and learn chants like “Seng ken, ken cang, Katos!,” meaning, “It’s okay, I’m strong!” Prepped for battle, you’ll take your newly-acquired skills to the ring—which, in mepantigan, is a muddy field.

"Mepantigan takes from and uses several martial arts techniques and blends them together with Balinese drama and contemporary dance, including the gamelan orchestra in the background, creating a fight performance art. It can be done in a rice field, or muddy grounds, even on the beach. It’s difficult to imagine, but it involves a lot of wrestling, throwing and submissions, all whilst dressed in Balinese traditional attire"

Restore lost energy or revive a troubled mind at Sebatu’s magic springs.

Sebatu village, around 15 kilometers north of Ubud, is home to one of the island’s most powerful springs. The Balinese come from across the island to bathe in its sacred waters and perform ‘melukat,’ a traditional water purification ceremony intended to rid the mind and body of negative influences. ‘Lukat’ means ‘letting go’ and as such stress and sin, whether from this life or past ones, are said to melt away following the rite.

The Experience

Restore lost energy or revive a troubled mind at Sebatu’s magic springs where our local guides, Stone and Made, will accompany you for an authentic Balinese cleansing ritual.

First, they’ll take you on an hour-long walk through the village’s patchwork of rice fields. You’ll be able to watch the farmers at work, learn about the small shrines that border each paddy, and see native fruit trees, including cacao, passion fruit, guava, jackfruit and banana, along the way.

Next, you’ll continue down around 150 steps to Sebatu’s hidden springs, situated at the bottom of a rocky river gorge. With a quietened mind, our guides will lead you through a traditional prayer and melukat ceremony in the sacred pools. Carrying kewangan(cone-shaped offerings), you’ll dip into the waist-high water, place your gift of flowers in the rockface, and walk under the waterfall to let the cleansing flow do its job.

After a quick change and dry off, you’ll head up to Sebatu warung for a simple Balinese lunch in their garden terrace overlooking the ravine.

"As we descend further we reach the shrine and the rushing waters that run through the complex of this very holy cleansing temple at Sebatu. Hidden away to the northwest from the other bigger temple complexes, this holy spring seems to be an almost secret place, a place you would never find without a well informed guide or priest to take you there."

Join Nyoman, for a walking tour of his village, one of only a few remaining Bali Aga communities.

Home to a community of around 800 Bali Aga (the island’s original people), the village of Tenganan Dauh Tukad sits snugly amongst the jungly peaks of Karangasem, East Bali. Inhabitants here still practice the age-old crafts and ancient traditions of the indigenous Balinese, including Perang Pandan (Pandan Wars), an annual dueling ceremony involving spiky pandanus leaves.

The Experience

Dogs, roosters and pigs roam freely around as you take in the rural Bali scenes – offerings being made, wood carvers at work, cock fighters in training, tuak (local palm wine) fermenting in home brew vats… You’ll also be able to browse rare geringsing fabrics, woven using the complex double ikat method; and native ata baskets, made with local vines.

If you would like to, we can arrange a second stop at Pasir Putih, a hidden white sand beach around 15 kilometres from Tenganan. After the morning’s walk, you can wind down under a parasol, take in the shoreside scenery, or cool off in the clear, turquoise waters.

A traditional lunch of gulai ikan (fish curry), sate lilit, (fish satay), kangkung (Asian greens), and sambal matah (Balinese chilli relish) at Warung Mertha Sari can be arranged for a small extra cost if you wish.
