Travel beyond Tegallalang’s famous rice terraces to the workshop of Bali’s original Garuda carver.
Pak Made Ada is a third-generation master carver specialising in ornate wooden Garuda statues and traditional panelling. His metres-high pieces, which have inspired craftspeople across the island, are displayed in various palaces, having been commissioned by Indonesia’s longest-running head of state, President Suharto.
His remarkable talent has attracted international acclaim as well—he travelled to Germany, the USA and Russia to share his work with the likes of Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin and Ronald Reagan.
Stop by his studio, which is filled with hand-shaped handicrafts like mythological sculptures, tactile wood panels and Balinese furniture fashioned from teak, jackfruit, sandalwood and mahogany.
Next, head to a traditional bale for an open-air woodcarving masterclass overlooking the neighbouring paddies. Under the instruction of Pak Made Ada’s sons, Yande or Nyoman, you’ll sculpt a Balinese flower relief with just a chisel and mallet.
