Thursday’s Eksotika at The Music Room welcomes Hugo Mendez, head honcho of Sofrito, the long established London based club night that has gone one to become a successful record label known for showcasing the tropical side of Afro Funky sounds to the more specialist sounds of Compas, Cumbia & Beguine.

Being an integral part of the scene in Europe for the past 15 years, Hugo’s mission has been to bring these overlooked styles and rhythms into record boxes and onto dance floors across the world.

Having produced numerous compilations for Strut Records as well as a host of projects on labels including Soundway, Jazzman and many others, his latest adventure The Nouvelle Ambiance label shines a light on cultural and musical interchanges, notably with the exhaustively-researched double compilation of African music in Paris in the 80s.

Originally influenced by formative experiences in the clubs of 90s London and years spent travelling to find records and research the origins of musical scenes across the Caribbean, Hugo’s sets include Caribbean carnival rhythms, Congolese Soukous, Reggae experiments, classic Haitian Compas, Afro Disco and the bass-heavy garage sounds of London.

His monthly radio show on Red Bull Radio explores and celebrates different global scenes and styles, from the Haitian sounds of New York to the Carnival sounds of Trinidad and the roots of Congolese Rumba.
